Last year, the birth rate in Incheon increased by 11.6%, ranking first among metropolitan cities.

The birth rate increase in Incheon city was the highest among 17 cities and provinces nationwide last year.

Incheon city announced that the number of births last year was 15,242, an 11.6% increase compared to 13,695 in 2023.

This is the largest increase since 2014.

Last year, following Incheon, Daegu had the next highest birth rate increase among the metropolitan areas at 7.5%, followed by Seoul at 5.3%, Jeollanam-do at 5.1%, and Sejong at 5%. The national average increase rate was 3.6%.

Additionally, Incheon’s total fertility rate last year was 0.76 children, slightly surpassing the national average of 0.75 children.

It is analyzed that such a high rate of increase in births in Incheon is due to the ‘1 Billion-plus i Dream’ policy, which has been well received. This policy provides 100 million won support to every child born in Incheon until they turn 18.

Furthermore, various Incheon-type birth policies, including ‘Thousand-won Housing’ for newlyweds, have been introduced, which are positively impacting birth rates and population influx.

Incheon city explained, “The high birth rate increase in Incheon reflects citizens’ high expectations for Incheon-type birth policies,” and expressed their intention to establish themselves as the most exemplary city for birth and childcare through customized regional policies.
