Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon attended the ‘Seoul Learn Student Invitation Meeting’ held at a study room in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul. During the event, he stated that the results of the “Seoul Learn” educational welfare policy have been excellent this year. He emphasized, “There is nothing more hopeful than giving opportunities to those who are willing to work hard.”
Mayor Oh noted that it has been four years since the inception of Seoul Learn. Over these years, the number of students gaining admission to universities through this program has increased by 100 each year. This year saw up to 782 students entering universities, and it is anticipated that the number will increase significantly from next year as students who started using the program in middle school will start taking university entrance exams.
He expressed his aspiration that the program has become popular among students from less privileged backgrounds, encouraging them to challenge themselves academically rather than giving up. He also mentioned the potential for advertising the program through subway and bus ads, as well as EBS and online lecture materials.
Mayor Oh discussed expanding the eligibility criteria for the program from 60% of the median income to 80%, appealing to the government to approve this change to benefit more people. Additionally, he interacted with a mentor present at the meeting about the availability of popular lecturers. The mentor mentioned that while there is no shortage of lecturers, there is a deficiency in teaching materials. In response, Oh suggested implementing differentiated support, potentially adjusting teaching material support based on engagement and performance metrics over a six-month period.
