Choe Sang-mok, will he exercise the veto right again on the Special Prosecutor Act on Rebellion?

State Council Meeting Scheduled for the 31st,

Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is also the Minister of Economy and Finance, is expected to hold a State Council meeting on the 31st, following the Lunar New Year holidays. Attention is focused on whether he will exercise a veto again on the general special prosecutor law related to rebellion. Typically, the State Council meeting is held every Tuesday, but this week it has been postponed to the 31st, the only non-holiday weekday, due to the holiday period. It is reported that the agenda for this meeting has not been decided yet. However, since the decision deadline for the rebellion special prosecutor law, transferred to the government on the 18th, is February 2nd, it is likely that Acting President Choi will make a decision during the State Council meeting. Although it is known that Choi has been contemplating whether to exercise the veto during the holiday, the political sphere strongly predicts that he will do so.

This is because the ongoing disagreement between the ruling and opposition parties over the special prosecutor law leaves Acting President Choi with no change in the situation, which he has set as a prerequisite. Moreover, with the prosecution’s indictment against President Yoon Seok-yeol imminent, it is expected that Choi will consider the point that establishing a special prosecution may have no substantial benefit.
