According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the morning’s lowest temperatures are forecasted to be between -5 to 4 degrees Celsius, and the day’s highest temperatures between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Cold air descending from the north of the Korean Peninsula will result in temperatures being lower than the average (lowest temperatures -5 to 4 degrees Celsius, highest temperatures 7 to 12 degrees Celsius).

Snow, which started on the 2nd in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang regions, is expected to affect a wider area. With the influx of cold air and moisture brought by the southerly winds, as well as the influence of low pressure passing through the southern region, heavy and dense snow of 3-5 cm per hour (over 5 cm in the mountainous areas and eastern coast of Gangwon Province) will fall, particularly in Gangwon Province and northern North Gyeongsang areas. Snow could accumulate up to 1 meter in the mountainous regions of Gangwon Province by the 5th, so caution is needed for potential facility collapses due to snow weight.

Expected snow accumulations on this day include △ 3-8 cm in southern Gyeonggi Province △ 1-5 cm in Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi Province △ 3-8 cm in the Chungcheong region (1-5 cm on the western coast of South Chungcheong Province) △ 1-5 cm in eastern North Jeolla Province. In the Gangwon mountainous regions and eastern coast, 10-30 cm (over 40 cm in some areas), and in the inland Gangwon area, 5-10 cm (over 15 cm in some areas) are expected until the 5th. Northern Gyeongsang’s mountainous areas and eastern coast may see 10-20 cm (over 30 cm in some areas), with 5-10 cm (3-8 cm in Daegu, southwestern Gyeongsang inland) in northern Gyeongsang’s inland. Meanwhile, Ulsan, inland South Gyeongsang, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo can expect 1-5 cm.

The anticipated precipitation during the same period is △ 5-10 mm in the capital area △ 10-40 mm in Gangwon’s eastern coast and mountainous areas (5-20 mm in inland Gangwon) △ 5-20 mm in the Chungcheong region △ 5-30 mm in Gwangju and South Jeolla △ 5-20 mm in North Jeolla △ 10-40 mm in northern Gyeongsang’s mountainous areas and eastern coast △ 5-30 mm in Daegu, Busan, Ulsan, inland Gyeongsang, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo △ 10-40 mm in Jeju Island.

A representative from the Korea Meteorological Administration noted, “There can be variations in precipitation type and snowfall within the same city, county, or district due to minute temperature differences,” and added, “In the coming days, high waves due to swells are expected to crash onto beaches in the eastern coast, southern coast, and island regions of the southern area and Jeju’s coastline, potentially overtopping rocks, breakwaters, and coastal roads.”
