“During the summer vacation season, genre novels and comic books have dominated the bookstores. According to the bestseller rankings for the first week of August released by Kyobo Bookstore on the 8th, Japanese mystery master Keigo Higashino’s new work ‘The Fake’ ranked first overall for the second consecutive week. ‘Honmono’ by Sung Hae-na followed in second place, and the SNS sensation ‘Dark Psychology’ entered the charts at third place upon its release.
Keigo Higashino has once again become a favorite choice among readers, benefiting from the summer vacation sales boost. ‘The Fake’ has received consistent support from genre fiction fans since its release. Additionally, domestic novels like ‘Contradiction’ by Yang Gui-ja (4th place) and ‘I Said Goodbye’ by Kim Ae-ran (5th place) have maintained high rankings.
‘Dark Psychology’ debuted at third place overall with its release. The book, which addresses psychological techniques for persuading and manipulating others, as well as conflict resolution methods, garnered significant interest even during its pre-order phase. According to Kyobo Bookstore’s statistics, men in their 20s made up 18.6% of the readership, followed by men in their 30s at 17.8%, resulting in male readers in their 20s and 30s accounting for more than half (55.5%) of the total readership.
Michael Easter’s ‘The Comfort Crisis’ climbed 35 places to reach 10th place, significantly influenced by film critic Lee Dong-jin’s recommendation as the best book of the month on his YouTube channel ‘Lee Dong-jin’s Fire and Ice.’
In the comic book category, Yuto Suzuki’s ‘Sakamoto Days 21: Today’s Horoscope’ entered the rankings at 6th place. This series, which depicts legendary killers dealing with family and daily life, has been expanding its readership, boosted by the popularity of the anime of the same name.
Gosho Aoyama’s ‘Detective Conan 107’ jumped 20 places to 7th, further proving the strength of comic books during the summer season.
