A Father’s Last Day… An Seong-gi’s Eldest Son Shares on Social Media

The photograph shared on social media by Mr. A, the eldest son of South Korea’s beloved actor Ahn Sung-ki, who passed away on the 5th, is touching hearts.

Mr. A, who had been in the United States, returned home urgently on the 2nd to be by his ailing father’s side.

On the 4th, Mr. A posted an image from his father’s leading film “I Want to Go to That Island” in a story, capturing the attention of netizens.

The late actor, during an interview for the premiere issue of a magazine in December 1995, shared that he was once asked if his son A could play his younger self in the film “I Want to Go to That Island.” He declined out of concern for his son’s acting skills but later felt it might have been worth trying.

Despite Mr. A not leaving any accompanying text with the photo book, it conveys a profound, lingering emotion of a father’s bond with his son, deepening the sense of loss.

Born in 1951, Ahn Sung-ki debuted in the 1957 film “Twilight Train” and became a prominent figure in Korean cinema, known for films like “Two Cops,” “The Fox with Nine Tails,” “There Is No Justice,” “Silmido,” and “Radio Star” over the last 60 years.

Diagnosed with blood cancer in 2019, he had been declared in remission the following year but experienced a recurrence, continuing his battle until recently.

The late actor’s memorial will be held in room 31 at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Hall. His surviving family includes his wife, Oh So-young, and two sons.

The funeral, organized by the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation and the Korean Actors Association, will be conducted as a film ceremony. Veteran actor Shin Young-kyun will act as Honorary Chairman, with Lee Gap-seong, Director of the Korean Actors Association, Director Bae Chang-ho, Acting Director Shin Un-shik of the Shin Young-kyun Arts and Culture Foundation, and Yang Yun-ho, Director of the Korea Film Actors Association, forming the funeral committee to bid farewell to the nation’s actor.

The funeral is scheduled for 6 AM on the 9th, with the burial at Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong.
