Seoul Holds Forum on ‘Building Greenhouse Gas Cap and Trade’… “Leading Carbon Neutrality”

**Seoul Hosts 8th Expert Forum to Lead Carbon Neutrality in Building Sector**
– Discuss Support for Commissioning in Implementing Building Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade System

Seoul, [NEWsis] – The Seoul city government announced on the 4th that it will host an expert forum to promote the expansion of the ‘Building Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade System’.

The building greenhouse gas cap-and-trade system categorizes buildings into 12 types according to their use and sets emission standards and total amounts per unit area, along with reduction obligations.

The forum will focus on “Commissioning Technology for Meaningful Implementation of the Building Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade System” and will include presentations and discussions on domestic technology development and infrastructure expansion. Commissioning is a process for ensuring that building facility systems are operated optimally and efficiently by considering climatic elements during the building’s operational phase.

The forum, chaired by Hwang Jeong-ha, head of the Building Expert Committee of the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Green Growth Commission, will discuss commissioning support cases, the necessity of its introduction, and activation measures for implementing the cap-and-trade system.

Before introducing the cap-and-trade system, Seoul initiated the ‘Building Energy Reporting and Rating System’ in April, a system managing and evaluating the actual emissions of buildings, as part of the ‘Climate Accompaniment Building Project’.

As approximately 70% of Seoul’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings, reducing emissions in this sector is deemed essential for carbon neutrality.

The forum will take place on the 8th at the 13th-floor conference hall of Seoul’s Seosomun Building 1, and anyone interested is welcome to participate.

Ye Jang-gwon, head of the Climate and Environment Headquarters, stated, “The public role has become more crucial in terms of policy inducement and support enhancement for improving building operational efficiency,” and emphasized that “Seoul will continue to actively work on discovering policies to lead carbon neutrality in the building sector.”
