“Identification card before treatment” but starting next week… Hole in the mobile health insurance card [Subtitle news]

A poster with a notice stating that bringing an ID card is mandatory was attached to an internal medicine clinic. With the cooperation of the clinic, I tried registering for a medical examination using my mobile health insurance card in advance.

When the hospital device recognized the QR code of the health insurance card, it confirmed my eligibility without any issues and the registration was completed smoothly.

However, the mobile health insurance card I presented belonged to a colleague, not myself.

Even though I submitted someone else’s health insurance card to the hospital, it was not detected.

How is this possible?

To install the mobile health insurance card app, you must enter your cellphone number and receive a verification code to confirm your identity. But if two people coordinate beforehand and enter the phone number of the person who will receive the verification code onto the other person’s phone…

“You’ve got a text (verification code) here.”

By passing on the received verification code and entering it on the mobile phone, another person’s mobile health insurance card can be installed without any issues. If two people coordinate, it is possible to receive medical treatment using someone else’s mobile health insurance card.

Not only that, it was also possible for two individuals to install one person’s mobile health insurance card on their respective cellphones. This raises the possibility that multiple individuals could receive medical treatment using one person’s mobile health insurance card.

Since the mobile health insurance card does not have a photo, hospitals and clinics do not have a reliable way to verify the identity of the cardholder.

When asked about a solution to this issue, the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service mentioned that they are considering system enhancements to allow authentication via telecommunications providers only on the individual’s own mobile phone to address this problem.
