[Herald Economy = Reporter Goo Bonhyeok] The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) announced that it has published Issue Brief No. 85, which discusses the sophisticated AI-based cybersecurity threats and strategies to respond to them in the digital transformation era.

The acceleration of digital transformation and the expansion of global connectivity are broadening attack surfaces throughout society, causing cyber threats to become more complex and intelligent, revealing limitations in existing security systems.

This issue brief addresses the limitations of traditional security systems before the introduction of AI and analyzes the paradigm shifts in cyber attack and defense brought about by AI technology. Given that cyber attack and defense have entered a stage of ‘co-evolution’ where they influence and develop with each other, it emphasized that securing reliability and autonomy in AI-based security systems is an important research task.

In addition to the development directions of key responsive technologies such as AI-based autonomous Security Operations Centers (SOC), Zero Trust, and eXplainable AI (XAI), it presents technical and policy tasks for building future intelligent security systems.

KISTI is carrying out the project of building, operating, and supporting information security systems in the field of science and technology, and is working to enhance information protection capabilities in the science and technology and aerospace sectors by establishing and operating the Science and Technology Cyber Safety Center and the Aerospace Cyber Safety Center. Based on its accumulated experience in security monitoring and R&D achievements, it is leading the advancement of security in national research networks and public infrastructure by developing and applying various security technologies.

KISTI is actively researching AI security technologies such as the development of AI-based threat detection and response models, and the advancement of decision-support technologies based on XAI. It is also promoting the establishment of an inter-agency data sharing and collaboration platform to respond to the latest attack techniques like encrypted cyber threats.

Looking ahead, cybersecurity is expected to rapidly evolve into an ‘AI-native security ecosystem’ centered on AI. In response to this, KISTI plans to contribute to building a sustainable national AI security system by focusing on developing technologies, establishing an inter-agency information sharing system, strengthening supply chain security, and preparing governance to ensure AI reliability.

KISTI President Siik stated, “AI-based security technology will be core infrastructure in transforming into an intelligent security system that increases national security capability and autonomously responds to rapidly changing cyber threat environments,” and added, “KISTI will continue to enhance the reliability and autonomy of AI and data-based security technologies to lead the enhancement of national cybersecurity competitiveness.”
