Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States, announced on social media on the 11th local time that he would nominate Tom Homan, who served as the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the first Trump administration, as the chief overseer of border control.
President-elect Trump stated on Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that Tom Homan, former ICE director and a strong advocate of border control, will join the Trump administration in the role of overseeing our borders (‘Border Czar’).” This announcement of a key appointment in the forthcoming administration comes after the earlier designation of campaign co-director Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff, making this the second public announcement ahead of other cabinet appointments.
Trump praised Homan, saying, “(Homan) will be responsible for border issues including the southern and northern borders, maritime, and aviation security. I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is no one more suitable for controlling and overseeing our borders.” He added that “Tom Homan will also oversee the deportation of all illegal immigrants to their countries. Congratulations to Tom. I believe he will excel at this long-anticipated task.”
This is the first direct announcement Trump has made regarding his second administration’s appointments except for naming Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff on the 7th.
While the exact responsibilities of the ‘Border Czar’ position have not been detailed, it is anticipated that, given Trump’s vow to reverse President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, including stemming the flow of people crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, this role would involve overseeing departments and agencies within the federal government concerning strong border control and the crackdown on illegal immigrants.
Homan has recently expressed strong views on immigration and the issue of undocumented immigrants in an interview with CBS, stating that “families can be deported together” in relation to Trump’s promise of mass deportations.
