On March 17, Venezuela’s baseball team celebrated their victory over Italy, securing a spot in the WBC finals. The match, held at LoanDepot Park in Miami, saw Venezuela triumph 4-2. This marks their best performance since 2009 when they reached the semifinals.
Italy was considered a strong team, having defeated formidable opponents like the U.S. earlier in the tournament. Despite not being a traditional baseball powerhouse, Italy boasted a lineup enhanced by many Italian-American MLB players, which gave them depth in both pitching and hitting.
Trailing 0-2, Venezuelan veteran Eugenio Suárez (Cincinnati Reds) changed the momentum with a solo home run off a knuckle curve thrown by Italian starter Aaron Nola (Philadelphia Phillies). Ronald Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves) later tied the game with an infield hit, followed by clutch hits from Maikel Garcia (Kansas City Royals) and Luis Arraez (San Francisco Giants) to take a 4-2 lead. Daniel Palencia (Chicago Cubs), closing with a 100-mph fastball and two strikeouts, secured the victory for Venezuela. The Venezuelan team showcased a strategic “bullpen” approach, rotating through seven pitchers to suppress Italy’s offensive threats.
Venezuela will face the U.S. in the finals on March 18. Political tensions between the two countries are high, following a military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the U.S. in January. After the game, former U.S. President Donald Trump fueled controversy by suggesting that Venezuela might become America’s “51st state”. Miami’s geographical proximity to countries like Venezuela means the match will likely draw significant fan support, promising a fiercely contested showdown.
