Chinese state media has indirectly criticized the United States by emphasizing that even America’s allies are finding it more beneficial to rely on China rather than the U.S., according to survey results. They claimed, “China’s stability is gaining the world’s trust.”

On the 17th, the Global Times, an English newspaper affiliated with the People’s Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, highlighted in an editorial the results of a recent survey jointly released by U.S. media outlet Politico and British polling agency Public First. The survey indicated that citizens of the U.S.’s ‘four major allies’—Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France—believe it’s better to depend on China than on the United States. The editorial emphasized that “this reflects an overall change in the Western world’s perspective towards China.”

According to the report, the survey, released on the 15th (local time), received responses from 10,289 people. The percentages of respondents from each country who chose China over the U.S. as the country to depend on were: Canada 57%, the United Kingdom 42%, Germany 40%, and France 34%.

In contrast, the percentages that chose the United States were 23%, 34%, 24%, and 25%, respectively.

Regarding the survey results, the Global Times stated, “In times of chaos, markets pursue stability, and countries rely on trustworthy partners.” They interpreted this as “China undoubtedly providing ‘certainty,’ the most scarce resource in today’s world.”

The editorial particularly noted that “trust is built not just through slogans, but accumulated through continuity, stability, and the ability to fulfill promises.” They suggested that “in turbulent seas, a nation that can stand firm naturally becomes a ‘counterbalance’ for other countries.”

Although not mentioned directly, it is speculated that the Global Times’ remarks were aimed at the U.S., which has sparked instability in the Middle East following airstrikes on Iran and engaged in trade wars with the world.

Recently, President Donald Trump has pressured major countries, including China, to dispatch warships to stabilize the Sol Strait, which is effectively blocked. Meanwhile, citing the war situation, he’s reportedly requested the postponement of planned visits and U.S.-China summits from the end of this month to early next month.

The editorial indirectly criticized this situation, asserting that “China does not export crises, transfer contradictions, or pursue aggressive tactics for its gain.” Instead, it stated, “China focuses on stabilizing its growth trajectory and efficiently managing its governance to provide the world with greater certainty, opportunities, and trust.”
