“The Pope is in critical condition but has slightly improved… Will resume duties in the afternoon.”

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for 11 days due to pneumonia, remains in serious condition but shows some signs of improvement, the Vatican announced on the evening of the 24th local time.

In a press release that evening, the Vatican stated, “The Pope’s condition is showing slight improvement despite being serious,” adding, “Today’s asthmatic breathing difficulties did not occur, and some blood test indicators have also improved.”

The Vatican also reported that the renal failure symptoms, which raised concerns about complications, are not currently a cause for particular worry. Renal failure is a common complication when elderly patients contract pneumonia.

Furthermore, the Vatican explained that although the Pope continues to receive oxygen therapy, the flow rate and concentration of oxygen have slightly decreased.

Additionally, the Vatican noted, “The Pope received the Eucharist (bread symbolizing the body of Jesus) this morning, resumed work in the afternoon, and in the evening, called a parish priest in Gaza to offer words of comfort.”

The Vatican also conveyed the Pope’s deep gratitude to all the faithful who have prayed for his recovery during his hospitalization.

The 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on the 14th after suffering from bronchitis since early this month. Initially, the Vatican reported that he was experiencing a complex clinical situation due to polymicrobial respiratory infection. On the 18th, a chest CT scan confirmed pneumonia in both lungs.
