The expansion of the “polar vortex,” a flow of extremely cold air surrounding the Arctic, is expected to bring severe cold weather to the southeastern United States, including Florida, as announced by the National Weather Service (NWS) under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on January 2nd, local time.
This cold wave is anticipated to begin in the Northern Plains (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota), east of the Rocky Mountains, and is expected to affect many areas across the Midwest, South, and East of the United States.
The southeastern United States is forecasted to experience the most severe cold and chilly winds of this winter, with many areas on the Florida Peninsula, the southernmost part, expected to drop below freezing.
On the night of the 7th, local time, temperatures in Minnesota could plummet to as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius, and areas in the South may reach lows of minus 8 degrees in Texas and minus 4 degrees in Georgia.
Where the cold air meets moisture, snow could fall, with the potential for heavy snowfall.
This cold wave is projected to last for 2 to 3 weeks or even longer.
