“Russia Officially Recognizes Taliban Government”… First Time Since Taliban Regained Control of Afghanistan

The article reports that the Russian government officially recognized the Taliban government of Afghanistan on the 3rd (local time), according to the AP news agency. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepted the credentials of the ambassador appointed by the Taliban and stated that this official recognition would help to foster a “productive bilateral cooperative relationship.”

This is the first time a foreign nation has recognized the Taliban government as the official representative of Afghanistan since the Islamic fundamentalist group re-seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, noted the AP news agency.

Previously, the Taliban’s foreign ministry announced that the ambassador they sent to Russia began his official duties under the approval of the Russian government.

After the U.S. military announced its withdrawal in 2021, the Taliban re-seized Afghanistan after about 20 years. However, for the past four years, the international community has not officially recognized the Taliban as the Afghan government.

In this context, Russia has been strengthening diplomatic relations with the Taliban, including inviting Taliban delegations to various international events.

In April, the Russian Supreme Court decided to lift the ban on the Taliban’s activities in Russia, which had been in place for 22 years, by halting its designation of the Taliban movement as a terrorist organization.

In addition to Russia, countries like China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Uzbekistan, and Pakistan have also accepted ambassadors appointed by the Taliban.
