On the 23rd, Bloomberg reported that Samsung Electronics is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses in collaboration with Google.

Although Bloomberg did not divulge specific details about the AR glasses in their interview with Roh Tae-moon, head of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience (MX) division, they mentioned that the glasses would eventually be released as part of a joint effort to develop an Android-based extended reality (XR) operating system.

Last month, Samsung and Google also announced their XR platform and the “Project Infinite” headset that will be equipped with it. Roh stated that regarding the AR glasses’ release timeline, they are working to reach the desired quality and readiness level as soon as possible.

Currently, companies like Google, Apple, and Meta Platforms (Meta) are striving to develop lightweight AR glasses that display data and graphics in real view. However, it is noted that development progress is slow due to cost and technical challenges. Samsung and Google’s AR glasses are expected to compete with Meta’s product, slated for release in 2027. There is also speculation that Apple might release related products.

The Project Infinite headset expected to launch this year is a device that combines AR and virtual reality. While it produces AR effects with outward-facing cameras, it primarily functions as a VR device that fully envelops the user.

Roh mentioned that the release date and price of the Infinite headset are under review. He further explained that Samsung and Google are collaborating with other companies to develop original content tailored for the headset.
