Personal Information Protection Commission Accepts Reports of Additional Personal Data Breach Related to ‘KT Unauthorized Small Payment Incident’

The Personal Information Protection Commission announced that it received a third report regarding a ‘Unauthorized Micro-Payments Incident’ from KT around 9 AM on the 17th.

During the thorough inspection of the micro-payment damage records, KT identified additional illegal micro base station IDs, which led to the possibility that the subscriber identification numbers (IMSI), device identification numbers (IMEI), and phone numbers of 2,197 customers may have been leaked. KT reported this finding.

Consequently, the cumulative number of reports filed by KT has been tallied as follows: ▲1st report (September 11) – 5,561 people, ▲2nd report (September 18) – 20,030 people, ▲3rd report (October 17) – 22,227 people.

The Personal Information Protection Commission has been investigating this incident since September 10, collaborating with the Ministry of Science and ICT’s joint public-private sector investigation team and the police to verify related data. The Commission plans to thoroughly review KT’s additional analysis data and investigate any potential violations of the Personal Information Protection Act.
