OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is teaming up with U.S. semiconductor company Broadcom and Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor foundry, to develop its own AI chip, according to a report by Reuters.
OpenAI plans not to rely solely on AI chips from industry leader Nvidia, but to develop its own chip with Broadcom and outsource production to TSMC.
OpenAI has been exploring various options to diversify chip supply and reduce costs, and it is known to plan to use AMD chips alongside Nvidia chips to meet the rapidly increasing infrastructure demand.
Known as a major customer of Nvidia, OpenAI’s decision to use AMD chips as well as develop its own AI chip is interpreted as a move to diversify chip supply.
Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, who is building alliances for the development of in-house AI semiconductors, expressed a desire for AI chip collaboration when he met with representatives from Samsung and SK during his visit to Korea last January.
