(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Jo Sung-mi – The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that the Open RAN Alliance will hold its regular technical general meeting at Incheon Paradise Hotel from the 10th to the 14th with over 300 member companies from around the world to discuss the standardization of Open RAN technology and ways to ensure interoperability among manufacturers’ equipment.
Established in 2018, the Open RAN Alliance is a global private organization leading the standardization of Open RAN technology, consisting of 11 working groups for standardization in various technology fields.
In South Korea, 9 companies and organizations, including the three major telecommunications companies, Samsung Electronics, SOLiD, HFR, InnoWireless, ETRI, and TTA, participate. This general meeting will discuss technology for improving the performance of Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC), known as the “brain” of Open RAN, to control various devices connected to Open RAN network based on artificial intelligence, as well as review the status of standardization of open communication technology.
Among domestic companies, SK Telecom proposed standardization of the “Telco Edge AI” infrastructure technology to increase the value of mobile networks by reducing the burden of computation concentrated in the cloud through edge computing.
Meanwhile, in conjunction with the technical general meeting, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the domestic Open RAN consortium called the Open RAN Industry Alliance (ORIA) held a symposium, with participation from experts from South Korea and abroad, including Chairman Choi Jin-seong of the Open RAN Alliance (COO & Legal Adviser at Deutsche Telekom), Ryu Tak-gi, Chairman of ORIA (Infrastructure Technology Manager at SK Telecom), and Professor Kim Dong-gu of Yonsei University.
According to the global research firm QY Research, Open RAN is considered a core technology for the evolution of next-generation mobile base stations. It is expected to grow into a market worth approximately $10.2 billion (about 14 trillion won) by 2029.
