(San Francisco=Yonhap News) By Taek-jong Kim, special correspondent – As competition heats up in the search market with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the market share of Google, the world’s largest search engine company, has slightly decreased, while Microsoft (MS) has shown an increase.
According to StatCounter, a global web traffic analysis site, as of April, Google’s global search market share was calculated at 90.91%.
This is a decrease of about 2% points (1.91 points) compared to a year ago (92.82%), and also lower by 0.47 points compared to last month (91.38%). Compared to May of last year, when the market share was highest in the past 12 months at 93.11%, it has dropped by 2.20 points.
While Google still maintains over 90% market share in the search market, its dominance has slightly decreased.
On the other hand, MS’s search engine Bing’s market share in April was 3.64%, showing an increase of nearly 1% compared to a year ago (2.76%).
Yahoo’s search market share was 1.13%, with no significant changes from last April (1.11%).
In the US search market, changes in market share are more pronounced.
Google’s share in April dropped to 86.58%, down 2.3 points from a year ago (88.88%). Most of Google’s decline was absorbed by MS Bing.
MS’s share increased from 6.43% to 8.24% during the same period, approaching 10%.
Yahoo rose slightly from 2.33% to 2.59%.
After the introduction of OpenAI’s chat GPT, MS quickly integrated it into its search engine, challenging Google’s dominance in the search market.
In addition, in the ‘search antitrust lawsuit’ filed by the US Department of Justice against Google, MS is advocating the government’s claim that Google illegally dominates the market, aiming for market restructuring.
MS CEO Satya Nadella attended a trial last October as a witness and expressed concerns that allowing Google’s illegal monopolistic position in the search market could also strengthen Google’s dominance in the AI market.
