Deputy head of NASA: “Korea is a key partner to go to space together”

The Deputy Director of NASA, Pam Melroy, visited Korea.
Deputy Director Melroy stated in an interview with KBS that Korea, which recently opened a space agency, is a key partner for the United States in the field of space development.
Reporter Ji Hyung-cheol met with her.

Pam Melroy, the Deputy Director of NASA, who participated in the Iraq War in 1991 and completed three missions at the International Space Station for a total of 38 days.
[Pam Melroy/NASA Deputy Director: “I decided to become an astronaut after seeing the Apollo program in the 1960s. So I became a test pilot in the Air Force and then an astronaut. Sounds easy, right? It wasn’t.”]
Deputy Director Melroy, who attended the International Space Research Commission in Busan, emphasized the importance of the recently opened space development agency, the Space Agency.
[Pam Melroy/NASA Deputy Director: “Having a single communication window (space agency) is very important. It is for coordinating everything in one place for international cooperation.”]
During the meeting with KBS, she evaluated Korea as a ‘key ally’ in the field of space development.
[Pam Melroy/NASA Deputy Director: “Korea has tremendous technical capabilities. It will be an amazing partner for NASA and our other partners in leading humanity into space.”]
She is currently promoting the ‘Artemis program’ to send humans to the Moon with over 20 countries and suggested expanding cooperation into various fields.
[Pam Melroy/NASA Deputy Director: “We discussed the ‘Asian air quality concept.’ Recently, (in Korea) we observed pollution and air quality at high altitudes from aircraft.”]
Deputy Director Melroy also expressed hope that Korea could play a role in creating international norms for the peaceful use of space amid fierce space development competition.
