President Trump has expressed his willingness to attend the APEC summit, which will be held in Gyeongju at the end of October. There, he might have a chance to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and he stated that he would also like to meet with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un “as soon as possible.”

In the early hours of today (26th), U.S. President Donald Trump stated during the South Korea-U.S. summit that he might attend the APEC summit, which will be held in South Korea at the end of October.

[Donald Trump/U.S. President: {Do you intend to attend the APEC summit held in South Korea?} It’s a meeting in South Korea, right? Yes, I would like to attend. When I visited Korea before and gave a speech in the National Assembly, I was warmly welcomed and invited to a beautiful venue. It seems that I will soon visit Korea for a trade meeting hosted by Korea.]

Considering that APEC discusses multilateral economic cooperation among Asia-Pacific countries, it seems that the trade meeting mentioned by President Trump refers to APEC.

President Trump also showed a positive response to questions about the possibility of meeting North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un or Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Gyeongju APEC.

During the summit today, many discussions were held about the North Korean issue, particularly regarding the past relationship between President Trump and Chairman Kim. President Trump maintained that he still has a good relationship with Chairman Kim and expressed a desire to meet him again soon.

[Donald Trump/U.S. President: {If Chairman Kim wants to meet, when would you like to meet?} Since I had a good relationship with Chairman Kim, I would like to meet him soon. We had the first joint press conference together.]

With President Trump making proactive statements about attending the APEC in Gyeongju and meeting with Chairman Kim, there are positive expectations for improving relations between South Korea, North Korea, and the United States, as well as the potential resumption of South-North or North-U.S. dialogues following the South Korea-U.S. summit.
