The Democratic Party’s Comprehensive Response Special Committee on Three Major Independent Counsel Cases expressed concerns on the 28th at the National Assembly Communication Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, regarding the court’s dismissal of the arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. They urged the special counsel to reapply for the warrant after further investigation.
The special committee, led by Chairwoman Jeon Hyun-hee, emphasized the public’s growing demand for a “special court for treason” and urged the judiciary not to ignore these warnings from the people.
In a press conference held at the National Assembly’s communication center, Chairwoman Jeon stated that the judiciary must confront the public outrage caused by the dismissal of the arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Han.
When asked whether the party plans to push for the establishment of a special court, Chairwoman Jeon responded that the party is not actively considering or reviewing a “special court for treason” at this time, but acknowledges the necessity of closely monitoring public opinion in light of recent court events.
Within the Democratic Party, there are rising calls for the establishment of a special court. Democratic Party lawmaker Park Jumin posted a brief message on Facebook immediately after the warrant’s dismissal, stating the “need for a special court.” Lawmaker Lee Seong-yun also expressed concerns about the decision and indicated that “special investigations require a special court.”
Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Yong-min shared on Facebook that the Supreme Court’s actions in the previous presidential election case involving President Lee Jae-myung reflected an intention to intervene in the election. He criticized the judiciary for decisions he perceived as distorting the law and argued that a special court for treason cases is essential due to the loss of public trust in the judiciary.
A special court refers to a judicial body established by special law to handle specific cases and crimes. In September 1948, the Constituent National Assembly set up a “Special Court for Anti-National Acts” based on the Anti-National Acts Punishment Law.
