Ministry of Interior and Safety Forms ‘Election Support Situation Room’ and Transitions to Emergency Work System to Support Fair Election Management
(Seoul=Yonhap News) Yang Jung-woo and Hong Kuk-ki report that the 21st presidential election, prompted by the dismissal of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
The government, during the regular Cabinet meeting presided over by Acting President and Prime Minister Han Deok-soo at the Government Complex Seoul on the 8th, proposed, reviewed, and resolved this agenda.
Moreover, to allow citizens to participate in voting conveniently, the election day has been designated as a temporary public holiday.
This election date has been set according to Article 68 of the Constitution and Article 35 of the Public Official Election Act, which stipulate that an election must be held within 60 days from the confirmation of the cause of holding the election due to a presidential vacancy. The election date must be announced at least 50 days in advance.
Former President Yoon was dismissed following a decision by the Constitutional Court on the 4th.
Taking into account the period necessary to fully ensure citizens’ voting rights and to prepare for the election without disruption, the government stated it has determined June 3, the 60th day after the presidential vacancy, as the election date.
The Ministry of Interior and Safety plans to maintain an emergency work system by organizing the ‘Election Support Situation Room’ to support the fair management of the 21st presidential election until the election day.
Ko Gi-dong, Acting Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Safety, emphasized, “Considering the public’s heightened interest due to the sudden presidential vacancy, we will do our utmost to support a fair and transparent election by pooling the resources of related ministries and local governments.”
