Song Eon-seok: “We are not fixated on having the opposition secretary in the Legislation and Judiciary Committee… Ruling party should accept the special investigation into Daejang-dong.”

Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 1st at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, that he will not be fixated on the condition of appointing an opposition secretary for the Legislation and Judiciary Committee in relation to the government investigation into the abandonment of the appeal on the Daejang-dong case.

Previously, the People Power Party had set conditions for accepting the Democratic Party’s proposal for a National Assembly investigation, including the appointment of Representative Na Kyung-won as the opposition secretary of the Legislative Judiciary Committee, halting unilateral operation of the committee, and adopting witnesses and references by bipartisan agreement. However, the ruling and opposition parties could not reach an agreement on the government investigation regarding the decision not to appeal the Daejang-dong trial after discussions the previous day.

By withdrawing the condition of appointing the opposition secretary of the Judiciary Committee, it seems that the People Power Party is increasing the pressure on the Democratic Party to accept the government investigation.

During the Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly, Song stated, “I hope the Democratic Party will accept the government investigation immediately to reveal the substantive truth to the public, including the suspected external pressure to abandon the appeal on the Daejang-dong case, and even what they call fabricated prosecution.”

He also noted, “Those who avoid the government investigation are the culprits,” criticizing the Democratic Party for making excuses and evading, and adding that the People Power Party is open to negotiations to uncover the truth.

Additionally, regarding Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae, who was accused of molesting a female parliamentary secretary, Song asserted that “the brazen secondary harm following the sexual violence incident is going too far.”

Regarding Representative Jang, Song mentioned, “Jang claims there was no molestation, saying it was a dating violence incident, and has started making a brazen claim of being the victim.”

He further criticized, “According to Representative Jang, a dating violence perpetrator voluntarily filmed a video of the dating violence and provided it to a broadcaster, which is an incoherent statement that no one would agree with,” adding, “This is a typical case of shameless secondary harm by framing an innocent person as a criminal for self-preservation.”

He continued, “Former Representative Min Byung-doo, who was a senior in Jang’s constituency, resigned as a lawmaker immediately after being exposed for sexual misconduct,” urging Representative Jang to resign responsibly.

He also warned, “If the Democratic Party covers for Representative Jang out of leniency, they will face public judgment,” and demanded severe disciplinary action and the resignation of Jang, whom he referred to as a sexual offender and secondary offender.
