Kim Sang-wook, a member of the People Power Party, expressed his support for the impending impeachment vote against President Yoon Suk Yeol and called on the ruling party to join him.
On the 10th, at a press conference held in the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Kim stated, “This martial law is baseless, unconstitutional, and its aim is to eliminate political dissent, which is undemocratic.”
Kim continued, “Based solely on the conservative values of upholding constitutional order and the spirit of liberal democracy, and with a deep sense of apology, I endorse the upcoming impeachment vote against the president who planned this unconstitutional and undemocratic martial law,” he criticized, saying, “It is a national crime that should be thoroughly sanctioned to prevent recurrence.”
Kim also urged, “I call for the president’s apology and immediate resignation” and demanded “sincere acknowledgment of wrongdoing and cooperation for the president’s impeachment from our ruling party.” He added, “It’s the least responsible action the ruling party can take toward the public for its mistakes,” insisting that “rebuilding public trust by starting anew based on conservative values is the only path for the conservative party.”
Kim criticized, “The fact that martial law, an irrational act, occurred in 2024 is a result of the deeply rooted factionalism in our political sphere and the retaliatory politics of demonizing the opposition,” pointing out, “The idea that our side is always right and the other side is always wrong, and that the opposition cannot be tolerated, has persisted within our society, creating endless conflict since the Moon Jae-in administration’s campaign to eradicate past evils.”
Furthermore, Kim emphasized, “We must overcome such outdated practices,” urging, “Let’s now begin self-corrective efforts to overcome factionalism and defeat demonization, retaliatory politics, and extreme confrontation.”
