North Korea nuclear representatives urge compliance with Security Council resolutions and call for dialogue

The head representative for North Korean nuclear issues, Jeong Yeon-doo, Director-General of International Strategy and Information at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urged North Korea to adhere to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and United Nations Security Council resolutions and to return to dialogue.

Director-General Jeong stated on the 23rd local time at the high-level session of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, that South Korea will work closely with the international community to achieve complete denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

He also acknowledged that achieving complete denuclearization will require significant time and noted that a step-by-step denuclearization approach through dialogue and negotiation with North Korea, termed ‘halt-reduction-elimination,’ is being pursued.

Additionally, he expressed concerns over the arms control gap and the increased nuclear threats among nuclear-armed countries. He emphasized that these countries should engage in dialogue to enhance transparency and build mutual trust.
