Choi Sang-mok: “We will strictly crack down on illegal and violent protests without tolerance.”

As the verdict on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment trial is imminent, Acting President Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, reiterated the principle of strict measures against illegal violent protests.

At a cabinet meeting today, Deputy Prime Minister Choi stated, “With the significant decisions of the Constitutional Court approaching, concerns are growing regarding the amplification of social conflicts and physical confrontations.” He emphasized that “while the government will ensure the greatest possible support for legal and peaceful assemblies and demonstrations, there will be zero tolerance for illegal and violent assemblies or demonstrations, as well as acts challenging public authority. These will be strictly dealt with according to the law and principles.”

He added, “With freedom comes responsibility. As the international community is closely watching South Korea, I earnestly call on the public to demonstrate a level of civic awareness befitting our national prestige.”

Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Choi expressed regret over the ongoing national policy council, which is being operated solely by the ruling and opposition parties, saying, “While we are making all possible efforts at the government level to revitalize the livelihood economy, it is very disappointing and regrettable to see the national policy council operated without government involvement.”
