[Breaking News] Military Court Grants Bail to Former Special Forces Commander Kwak Jong-geun in ‘Martial Law’ Case

Former Army Special Forces Commander Kwak Jong-geun, who was indicted and detained for participating in the December 3 martial law, will be released on bail.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, the Central Regional Military Court approved Kwak’s bail application on the 4th. Bail refers to the release of a detained defendant under certain conditions. As a result, Kwak will be released in the morning.

During the trial on the 26th of last month, Kwak’s side admitted to the charges and stated there was no risk of flight or evidence destruction. They requested bail for medical treatment, highlighting that Kwak had been receiving hospital treatment for two years ahead of the martial law. At that time, Kwak mentioned, “I have been visiting the university hospital for over two years, requiring regular blood tests and medication adjustments, which is why I applied for bail.”

In the trial, Kwak also acknowledged the prosecution’s indictment, which alleged that he abused his authority by making it impossible for bodies like the National Assembly and the National Election Commission to exercise their powers, based on unconstitutional and illegal proclamations.

The Central Regional Military Court seems to have granted bail after considering that Kwak admitted to the charges and the low risk of evidence destruction.
