The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Checks the Status of Tourism Resource Development Projects in 15 Provincial and Metropolitan Governments.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it will hold a meeting on current issues with officials responsible for tourism development from 15 metropolitan municipalities at the Daejeon Confucian Tradition Ceremony Hall (Daejeon Byeolseo) on the afternoon of the 21st.

In this meeting, the ministry plans to review the progress of major projects such as metropolitan tourism development projects, fostering tourism hub cities, project contest-type regional tourism development projects, and the development of K-tourism islands. They will diagnose the causes of underperformance in certain projects and discuss support measures from the central government. Additionally, they will guide the implementation procedures and methods of the “Small-scale Tourism Complex System,” which will be enforced from the 23rd, gather local government opinions on tourism development business performance management systems, necessary legislative reforms, and projects to stabilize public livelihood.

The “Small-scale Tourism Complex System” was introduced to revitalize the economy and tourism in depopulated areas. It changes the authority to designate and approve development plans for tourism complexes in these areas from the governors to mayors, county heads, and district heads, reduces the area requirement from 500,000 square meters to between 50,000 and 300,000 square meters, and applies the mandatory facility standards more flexibly, from three types to at least two.

The ministry also announced plans to expand the issue-checking meetings, held biannually, to strengthen communication between central and local tourism policies and establish field-centered policies.

Kim Geun-ho, Director of the Tourism Industry Policy Bureau at the ministry, said, “This meeting is a meaningful opportunity where officials from the ministry and 15 municipalities gather to communicate and deliberate on invigorating the regional economy through tourism. We hope local governments actively promote and utilize the newly introduced ‘Small-scale Tourism Complex System’ to encourage private investment.”
