Seoul = Yonhap News, Reporter Lee Jae-young — On March 20, the day of the vernal equinox, temperatures will rise from noon with the westerly winds while air quality deteriorates.
Morning temperatures hovering around 0°C will rise to around 15°C by midday.
The expected high temperatures will be similar to or slightly above average at 12–17°C.
From the weekend, temperatures are expected to stay 3–8°C above the average for a while.
On Friday the 21st, morning lows will be 0–9°C, with daytime highs at 14–22°C. On Saturday the 22nd, temperatures will rise further, with morning lows at 1–12°C and daytime highs at 13–24°C.
The difference between day and night temperatures will be over 15°C and more than 20°C in inland Gyeongsang regions.
The westerly winds announcing spring also bring fine dust.
Air quality is expected to be ‘poor’ in Seoul, western Gangwon, Chungcheong, Honam, and Daegu, while other regions will be at a ‘moderate’ level.
However, even in regions expected to experience ‘moderate’ air quality, Busan and Gyeongbuk will have ‘poor’ levels in the morning and night, and from night in eastern Gangwon, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.
The inflow of foreign fine dust will begin in the afternoon and continue into the 21st.
On the 21st, fine dust levels nationwide, except for Yeongdong and Yeongnam, will be poor, and especially in the morning, Yeongnam areas will also experience poor air quality.
In eastern Gangwon and northeastern Gyeongbuk, wind gusts of over 90 km/h (25 m/s) are expected from the afternoon. The eastern coast of Gangwon and northern east coast of Gyeongbuk will also experience gusts of over 70 km/h.
Other regions will experience wind gusts over 55 km/h (70 km/h in Jeju highlands) so precautionary measures should be taken to prevent damage.
