Snow and rain expected nationwide starting in the afternoon… A ‘1m snowstorm’ also forecasted

Today (the 2nd), starting from the afternoon, a significant amount of rain or snow is expected nationwide. Particularly overnight, heavy snow is predicted to fall in central regions, with more than 1 meter of snow anticipated in the Gangwon Yeongdong area.

The Meteorological Administration forecasted on the 2nd, “From the afternoon, due to the cold air moving southward from the north, temperatures will drop, leading to rain or snow across the country.” Warm air coming from the south and cold air from the north will collide, forming strong precipitation clouds over the inland, resulting in either snow or rain, depending on the region.

By tomorrow, more than 100mm of rain is expected along the east coast and mountain regions of Gangwon, as well as the mountainous areas of Jeju, up to 80mm in Chungcheong, Honam, and Yeongnam regions, and 20-60mm in the capital area, including Seoul.

From night, the drop in temperature due to cold air from the north may turn the rain into snow. Not only in mountainous areas, but also in the Gyeonggi inland, 5-20cm of snow is forecasted, with up to 10cm in Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and Yeongnam inland areas, and 1-5cm expected in Seoul.

On the 4th, another wave of low pressure is expected to pass through, likely causing another round of rain or snow, mainly in the central regions.

Especially in the Gangwon Yeongdong area, snow accumulation could exceed 1 meter over four days until Wednesday. Due to the cold air descending from the northeast and strong easterly winds, explosive snow clouds are expected to develop in the Yeongdong region. In anticipation of the heavy snowfall starting in the afternoon, a preliminary heavy snow warning has been issued for all of Gangwon province, except for the southwestern part, and some areas in northeast Gyeonggi.

Furthermore, over 70cm of snow is expected in the northeastern mountainous areas of Gyeongbuk, and over 40cm in inland Gangwon.

The Meteorological Administration advised, “Due to the possibility of isolation from heavy snow, please check traffic conditions in advance and thoroughly prepare winter equipment when using vehicles.”
