[Provided by Gangneung Asan Hospital], [Herald Economy (Gangneung) = Journalist Park Jung-kyu] Gangneung Asan Hospital (Director Yoo Chang-sik) announced on the 7th that its Robot Surgery Center recently surpassed 1,000 robotic surgeries.
After introducing the robotic surgery system in July 2021 and surpassing 500 cases by October 2023, Gangneung Asan Hospital’s Robot Surgery Center exceeded 1,000 cases in just 16 months. It is establishing itself as a cutting-edge robotic surgery hub in the Gangwon and Yeongdong regions.
Robotic surgery involves the surgeon manipulating a console to use robotic arms, which allows for more precise operations compared to traditional open or laparoscopic surgeries. It also has advantages such as reduced bleeding and pain, resulting in faster patient recovery, thus gaining popularity.
Gwak Jae-young, Director of Gangneung Asan Hospital Robot Surgery Center, stated, “As robotic surgery is known to involve less pain and faster recovery, patient interest is increasing,” and added, “With the development and advancement of new robotic technologies, the range of treatable diseases is expanding, leading to a rapid increase in surgery numbers.”
He continued, “Recently, not only therapeutic effects but also aesthetic factors such as scars are becoming important considerations,” and “With the increase in cancer survival rates, more patients are opting for robotic surgeries due to their improved post-surgery quality of life.”
Currently, Gangneung Asan Hospital’s Robot Surgery Center consists of 12 specialists in general surgery, urology, and obstetrics and gynecology, who are performing various surgeries using the latest medical technology, the ‘da Vinci Xi robotic surgery equipment.’
According to data from Gangneung Asan Hospital’s Robot Surgery Center, general surgery accounted for the most surgeries at 40.6%, followed by urology at 35.6%, and obstetrics and gynecology at 23.8%.
Specifically, the most frequently performed surgeries were the highly complex prostatectomies, followed by cholecystectomies and hysterectomies.
Additionally, complex surgeries such as hysterectomies for cervical cancer patients and pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomies (PPPD) are being performed stably.
The Robot Surgery Center at Gangneung Asan Hospital plays a crucial role in patient-centered care by providing minimally invasive treatment that reduces pain and shortens recovery time for patients in the region.
Yoo Chang-sik, director of Gangneung Asan Hospital, said, “Achieving 1,000 surgeries at Gangneung Asan Hospital’s Robot Surgery Center is a significant achievement due to the efforts of our medical staff and the trust of our patients,” and added, “We will continue to provide precise and safe surgeries based on the advantages of the robotic surgery system to offer the best medical services to patients in the Gangwon and Yeongdong regions.”
Meanwhile, to commemorate the 1,000 robotic surgeries, Gangneung Asan Hospital will host a symposium titled ‘The Beginning of a New Leap’ at 6 PM on the 15th at the Ocean Hall of Gangneung Seamarq Hotel.
