Experience the “Traditional Sauce Making Culture” at Gyeongbokgung – Janggo Opens on April 4

The Cultural Heritage Administration, in collaboration with the National Heritage Promotion Agency, will host the “UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: Korean Jang Making Culture Event” on April 4th at the Janggo (Sauce Storage) and Saenggwabang of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The event aims to share and spread the value of the “Korean Jang Making Culture,” which was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December last year.

The Janggo, a space traditionally used to store palace sauces, will be specially opened to the public, allowing visitors to see traditional sauce jars, ingredients, and tools in one place. Additionally, a historical commentary program will be conducted by Park Kwang-il, a travel story representative, under the theme “Connecting Korea’s Past and Future through Jang Making,” providing insights into the history and stories of the Janggo.

Anyone visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace can enjoy the exhibition, while the historical commentary program will run twice for pre-registered participants at 3 PM and 4 PM.

At Saenggwabang, visitors can taste and experience traditional Korean sauces made by designated Korean food masters. Regional traditional sauces introduced by masters such as Gi Soon-do (Jinjang), Kwon Ki-ok (Eoyukjang), Han An-ja (Donggukjang), Seong Myeong-rye (Daemaekjang), Yoon Wang-sun (Cheonrijang), Jung Seung-hwan (Jukhyeom Doenjang), Yang Jeong-ok (Jeju Makjang), and Jo Jeong-sook (Doenjang) will be available for tasting.

There will also be a special hands-on experience to make Ssamjang using the masters’ sauces for those with prior reservations.

Reservations for the historical commentary program at Janggo and the sauce-making experience at Saenggwabang can be made on a first-come, first-served basis via the Naver reservation page from 2 PM on the 28th up until April 3rd. Participation is free, although Gyeongbokgung Palace entrance fees apply.

The Cultural Heritage Administration expressed hope that the event would help promote the value and excellence of the “Korean Jang Making Culture” both domestically and internationally and plans to actively pursue additional programs leveraging UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listings.
