2025 Daegu Opera House Open Studio New Vocalist Recruitment

[Daegu=NEWSIS] Reporter Park Joon = Daegu Opera House announced on the 13th that it will hold auditions to select talented vocalists for the 2025 Opernstudio.

Applications are open until 8 PM on the 26th and can be submitted through the Daegu Opera House website. The first round of auditions will select candidates based on videos submitted by applicants, and those who pass the first round will proceed to the second round, which includes live performance and an in-depth interview.

The Opernstudio is a European-style professional vocalist training center that works in conjunction with opera theaters to nurture young singers. It operates an educational program optimized to enhance the capabilities of new vocalists and provide stage experience, a setup typically found in reputable European theaters.

In Korea, Daegu Opera House is the only place specialized in theater-led operations. Leveraging its expertise as Korea’s only opera production theater, Daegu Opera House runs the Opernstudio as a core business to foster and support specialized opera vocalists.

The program aims to provide professional incubation for promising young vocalists to evolve into world-class opera singers and advance to broader stages. Therefore, systematic curricula are provided, including coaching from opera experts active in various fields each year and masterclasses with renowned domestic and international artists.

In 2024, five graduates from the Daegu Opera House Opernstudio were cast as main and supporting roles in La Bohème at the Sofia National Opera and Ballet Theater in Bulgaria and are preparing for two performances on the 24th and 26th. Additionally, the program consistently provides a platform for young vocalists to gain diverse stage experiences linked to theaters and opportunities for appearing on international stages by hosting auditions with visiting international theater directors.

The 2025 Opernstudio offers the selected vocalists free specialized opera training, including opera score reading, acting, and opera coaching classes, amounting to over 70 sessions annually, along with opportunities to perform in planned operas by Daegu Opera House and participate in overseas theater activities through the theater’s international network under stable conditions.

Students will receive a monthly practice allowance of 1 million won during the training period from March to October and an additional fee for appearances in planned operas.

The audition is open to anyone majoring in vocal music (including those expecting to graduate) under the age of 35 (born after February 7, 1990), regardless of their place of residence.

Director of Daegu Opera House, Jeong Gap-kyun, stated, “We expect the 2025 Daegu Opera House Opernstudio to serve as an opportunity and stepping stone for the next generation of opera vocalists to advance to diverse stages, both domestically and internationally.”
