[OSEN=Yun Huisun] Singer JK Kim Dong-wook, who holds Canadian citizenship, is set to be accused of violating the ban on foreign political activities.
On the 17th, a netizen made waves online by revealing a complaint against JK Kim Dong-wook on social media and online communities. The user shared, “JK Kim Dong-wook is to be accused for violating the ban on foreign political activities… I used to be a fan, but I deleted all his songs last year,” along with a photo of the complaint. The complaint captured public attention, indicating that JK Kim Dong-wook, who had previously given up his Korean nationality to acquire Canadian citizenship, is a foreign national. According to Article 17 of the Immigration Control Law, foreigners residing in Korea are prohibited from engaging in political activities, and violators may be subject to penalties.
The complaint further stated that “JK Kim Dong-wook publicly voiced his opposition to the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol several times via personal social media. On the 3rd, he organized a large-scale rally near the presidential residence, posted about it on social media, and continued to make political statements,” drawing more attention.
JK Kim Dong-wook is an overseas Korean who avoided military service owing to his Canadian citizenship. He has publicly revealed his political inclinations in the past, including criticizing former Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae on social media before deleting the posts, appearing as a guest on the far-right YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute, expressing support for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol following the declaration of martial law, and participating in anti-impeachment rallies. He also stirred controversy by criticizing the forced mourning over the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster.
