“‘Cambodian Victim’ in the Entertainment Industry: The Mysterious Death of the Late BJ Ah Young Remains Unsolved for Two Years”

[TV Report = Kim Hyun-seo] Recently, amid crimes of kidnapping and confinement targeting Koreans in Cambodia, the story of a woman who faced a mysterious death in the past has resurfaced in public interest. Despite it being over two years, the truth behind the incident remains unresolved, raising questions.

The late BJ A-Young (real name Byun A-young) was found wrapped in a red cloth in a pit in a village near Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on June 6, 2023.

Following this, a Chinese couple operating a hospital was arrested on charges of body abandonment. They claimed that A-Young died after having a seizure during treatment and, in panic, they abandoned the body.

Some people raised suspicions because A-Young’s body was severely swollen and showed signs of assault. Subsequently, local police investigated whether the hospital had official approval from the health authorities and if there was any malpractice during treatment.

The case was also covered by SBS’s ‘I Want to Know That’ (commonly known as ‘That’). In an interview with ‘That’, a local source stated, “The cause of death appears to be suffocation. There were no signs of torture or external injury on the body. A drug test came back negative. The victim was not wearing a top undergarment. The bottom undergarment was worn inside out, which led to suspicions of sexual assault,” he said.

Furthermore, the husband of the Chinese couple arrested for body abandonment stated, “She asked for an injection but wasn’t given one. There were already injection marks on her body. Because she wasn’t injected, she just fell asleep. Later, she was foaming at the mouth and unconscious. We gave her emergency medicine and provided oxygen, but she died,” he testified.

Prior to going to Cambodia, A-Young was known to have announced her retirement from being a BJ (Broadcast Jockey). At the time, she expressed her resolution, saying, “I’ve left BJ life behind. I’m going to live as a regular person for a while. I will live a new life as a regular person, A-Young, and work hard.”
