Wedding gift money averages 90,000 KRW this year… up 23% in three years.

Analysis of KakaoPay’s Remittance Envelopes indicates that due to rising prices, the average wedding gift money has increased to 90,000 KRW. According to the analysis of KakaoPay’s wedding gift remittance envelope data, the average cost of wedding gifts as of September this year was 90,000 KRW, marking an increase of about 23% compared to 73,000 KRW in 2021. The trend has shown a consistent rise annually, with 80,000 KRW in 2022 and 83,000 KRW last year.

By age group, the average wedding gift amounts were 60,000 KRW for people in their 20s, 100,000 KRW for those in their 30s to 40s, and 120,000 KRW for those in their 50s to 60s.

In a poll conducted by KakaoPay from October 1st to 3rd with 74,652 participants titled “What is an appropriate amount for a wedding gift?”, 58% of the respondents chose 100,000 KRW as the appropriate gift amount. Across all age groups, 100,000 KRW was the most preferred amount. Among those who chose 50,000 KRW, the majority were in their 40s, while the largest number of users who chose more than 100,000 KRW were in their 30s.

Meanwhile, perceptions of marriage among the younger generation are gradually improving. According to a survey on perceptions of marriage, childbirth, and parenting as well as government measures against low birth rates, conducted by the Low Fertility and Aging Society Committee from August 31 to September 7 among 2,592 men and women aged 25 to 49, the marriage intention of unmarried respondents increased by 4.4 percentage points from March to 65.4%.
