LG Display (034220) announced on the 7th that B.G. Kim, Executive Vice President of the Medium Business Division, has been named a fellow of the Society for Information Display (SID), the world’s most prestigious display academic organization.

SID annually selects fellows from within the top 0.1% of members based on recommendations from existing fellows and stringent committee evaluations, recognizing outstanding research achievements. Once selected as a fellow, the title is retained for life. Regarding Kim’s selection, SID highlighted “the commercialization of the world’s first tandem structure plastic OLED (P-OLED) as an automotive display, and the development and distribution of high-performance IT displays, including foldable screens and in-cell touch technology.”

Over the past 30 years, Kim has significantly contributed to the display industry, particularly in developing new products and foundational technologies. Recently, he has been acknowledged for pioneering the electric and premium vehicle display markets through the development of automotive P-OLED. His work includes applying a tandem OLED structure, with two organic light-emitting layers, in P-OLED for automotive displays, which are noted for their high brightness, longevity, and design flexibility due to the use of flexible plastic substrates.

Kim also developed ultra-high-resolution LCD products with in-cell touch functionality by embedding the touch sensor directly into the display. Furthermore, he expanded the application of foldable technology—previously used only in smartphones—to displays larger than 13 inches for IT purposes, contributing significantly to the commercialization of high-performance IT displays.
