The Seoul Metropolitan Government Holds Talk Concert with Police and Experts Ahead of International Day against Drug Abuse

The city of Seoul is hosting a talk concert titled “Drug Eradication: A Promise for the Future – Safe Seoul, Together” aimed at combating drug-related issues. The event will take place on the afternoon of the 23rd at the multipurpose hall on the 8th floor of Seoul City Hall.

In the first part of the event, a memorandum of understanding will be signed to reinforce the cooperation and commitment between relevant agencies for the eradication of drug use. This agreement includes the city of Seoul, police, medical associations, major universities, and private organizations, all aiming to provide systematic assistance to those struggling with drug-related problems. Participating entities include Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Just Peace Foundation, Seoul Medical Association, the Korea Drug-Free Movement Headquarters, and 20 major universities in Seoul. The agreement focuses on supporting addiction treatment and rehabilitation, preventing drug use among youth, and providing educational resources.

The agreement also aims to establish an early intervention model for young users, ensuring immediate counseling and treatment following police investigations to maintain the crucial treatment window.

The second part of the event highlights the importance of preventing drug use and treating addiction through a musical and a talk concert. Participants with past experiences of drug addiction, such as Beomki and Gino Park, will join to help spread the understanding of addiction as a treatable disease.

Seoul has also established the nation’s first “Drug Response Team” and plans to open the “Seoul Drug Control Center” within the Seoul Metropolitan Eunpyeong Hospital later this year. This center will offer integrated services including prevention, testing, counseling, treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.

Mayor Oh Se-hoon emphasized the collaborative effort with the police, educational offices, medical institutions, and private organizations beyond mere administrative cooperation. The goal is to create a safe social foundation where citizens seeking help to overcome drug addiction can find support for recovery, rehabilitation, education, and assistance.
