The National Police Agency Forms Dedicated Investigation Unit for ‘Malicious Posts on the Muan Jeju Air Disaster’

Jeju Air Muan Disaster, on the fifth day following the incident, wreckage from the localizer (azimuth facility) damaged by a collision with the Jeju Air passenger aircraft can be seen at the scene at Muan International Airport, Jeollanam-do, on the morning of January 2, 2025. The National Police Agency announced on the 2nd that it has set up a dedicated investigation team in response to the continuous posting of malicious comments targeting the families of victims of the Jeju Air disaster.

The National Police Agency will establish a dedicated investigation team consisting of 80 members under the leadership of the Director of the Investigation Bureau of the National Investigation Headquarters, with cyber investigation units from all city and provincial police departments. Additionally, 11 members from the Cyber Investigation Division of the National Police Agency and 25 members from the Jeonnam Provincial Office’s Cyber Investigation Team will expand the dedicated investigation unit to a total of 118 members.

The police plan to promptly and actively identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Each district’s dedicated investigation team will strengthen monitoring of malicious online posts and videos related to the Jeju Air incident and will initiate investigations upon detecting any illegal activities. They will also enhance cooperation with relevant agencies to simultaneously proceed with the deletion and blocking of malicious posts.

A representative from the National Police Agency stated, “Defamatory and insulting posts targeting the victims and their families continue to be uploaded,” and added, “We will take strong measures by promptly proceeding with the investigation to identify and arrest the suspects, and actively handle custody matters for the major malicious posts.”
