“The proposal to restore President Lee Jae-myung’s birthplace and create a memorial space, which was introduced in the Seoul Seodaemun District Council, has sparked controversy after passing the standing committee.”

“President Lee’s birthplace is located in Andong City, North Gyeongsang Province. It is considered unusual for the Seoul district council, rather than a local council of a nearby area, to submit a proposal requesting the government to undertake a restoration project for the birthplace.”

“According to the Seodaemun District Council today (12th), the proposal for the restoration of President Lee Jae-myung’s birthplace and the establishment of a memorial space, which was initiated by Democratic Party member Kim Deok-Hyun, the head of the council’s operations committee, passed the operations committee vote with a majority approval yesterday (11th).”

“The proposal includes not only the swift promotion of the restoration project but also the utilization of the memorial space as a key driver for local economic revitalization and tourism industry development, and requests for continuous support and respect.”

“In particular, the phrase ‘The Seodaemun District Council emphasizes that this proposal is not an act of flattery towards an individual but a measure to address regional neglect issues and respond to residents’ voluntary requests’ was included.”

“The proposal is expected to be submitted to the district council’s plenary session next month.”

“The Seodaemun District Council consists of 8 Democratic Party members, 5 People Power Party members, 1 Reform Party member, and 1 Independent. The Democratic Party is in a position to pass the proposal in the plenary session on its own.”

“Joo Isaac, a Reform Party councilor, remarked on Facebook, ‘It can only be seen as excessive loyalty competition among Democratic Party members ahead of the local elections.'”
