Impact of Buan earthquake, from Jeollabuk-do to Daejeon… 15 schools were found with cracks.

On the morning of the 12th, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, causing damage to a middle school wall in Gyeheamyeon, Buan-gun. The earthquake also affected buildings in 15 schools in Buan, Gimje, Daejeon, showing cracks and leaks. The earthquake struck at 8:26 a.m. on the 12th.

According to the education ministry, as of 3 p.m. on the same day, eight schools in Buan (6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools), two schools in Gimje (1 middle school, 1 high school), and one school each in Iksan, Jeongeup, Jeonju, Gunsan, and Daejeon reported cracks and leaks in their buildings. Fortunately, there were no casualties among the students. Two schools in Jeollabuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do shortened their classes due to the earthquake.

In response to the earthquake, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety activated Level 1 emergency response of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and raised the earthquake crisis alert to ‘caution’. This earthquake is the largest in magnitude among those that have occurred in the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas this year.
