The article discusses the challenges faced by schools in implementing AI digital textbooks due to inadequate high-speed internet infrastructure. Despite the necessity of a 10Gbps internet connection for smoothly using AI textbooks, 98% of schools across South Korea have internet speeds below 1Gbps. Only 33.4% of schools plan to install high-speed internet, while 66.6% have no current plans to do so. The Ministry of Education and other organizations have determined that upgrading the internet infrastructure is crucial for the full-scale adoption of AI textbooks. However, without financial support and clear implementation plans, many schools are reluctant to invest in such upgrades. Concerns are raised about potential performance issues, like “lag,” if AI textbooks are used without adequate internet speeds. Additionally, it is pointed out that 1Gbps internet allows only 66 simultaneous users, insufficient for schools with hundreds of students. Criticism is directed at the government’s rush to implement AI textbooks without ensuring necessary infrastructure improvements, risking disruptions during classes.
