In an interview with Kyodo News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that North Korean troops deployed to western Russia have been killed or injured in battle. Zelensky, during the interview held in Kyiv, mentioned that more North Korean soldiers are being sent to the frontlines where Russian and Ukrainian forces are engaged, and he noted that these soldiers are likely being used as cannon fodder by the Russian army. However, he did not specify the number of North Korean casualties.
Zelensky reiterated that once Ukraine is assured of joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and an environment to deter Russian aggression is established, it would be possible to regain some territories through negotiations after ending the combat. Although Ukraine had previously aimed to recover all territories occupied by Russian forces, this indicates a shift towards engaging in ceasefire negotiations if NATO membership is secured, even before full territorial recovery.
Zelensky acknowledged that Ukrainian forces lack the strength to reclaim certain areas, such as the Crimean Peninsula, highlighting the necessity for diplomatic solutions. He expressed a desire to end the war early but emphasized that diplomatic measures can only be considered when Ukraine is strong enough to prevent further Russian aggression, underscoring the need for NATO membership approval.
Zelensky also called for continued support from the West, citing the difficult situation on the eastern front where Russian forces are advancing. During the meeting in Kyiv with high-level EU officials, including European Council President António Costa, he requested NATO membership and expanded use of long-range weaponry.
