CNN reported on the 28th local time that a U.S. congresswoman with a rare neurodegenerative disease made history in Congress by delivering a speech using artificial intelligence (AI)-revived voice. Jennifer Wexton (D-Virginia), who suffers from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), used an AI-based voice model to deliver a speech in the House for the first time on the 25th.
Despite losing the ability to speak and move freely due to PSP, Wexton stated that she will come to the House to vote, even if she has to use a walker or wheelchair until the end of her term. Wexton announced last September that she would not seek re-election after revealing her PSP diagnosis.
PSP is a rare disease related to Parkinson’s disease that causes problems with walking, balance, and eye movement. It worsens over time and can lead to life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and swallowing problems.
