UK Encourages Expansion of Entropic Business… Moves to Strengthen ‘AI Sovereignty’

**London Office Expansion and Joint US-UK Listing Proposal:**

The UK government is actively encouraging Anthropic to expand its operations within the country. They are leveraging tensions with the United States as an opportunity to position London as a key hub for research and investment. This move is part of a broader trend where competition for AI leadership is transforming into a race to attract companies.

According to reports from the Financial Times and other media outlets on the 5th, the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has prepared a range of proposals for Anthropic. These include the expansion of their London office and the possibility of a dual listing.

The plan is set to be presented to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, who is expected to visit the UK at the end of the month for meetings with European clients and policymakers. It is reported that the UK Prime Minister’s office is also providing support for this initiative.

Despite Anthropic already having an office in London, efforts to persuade further expansion have intensified in recent weeks. This follows the US Department of Defense classifying Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

Former US President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic for setting a ‘red line’ against the military use of their technology. In late February, he stated on his social network, Truth Social, that “America will never allow radical and woke companies to dictate how the military conducts war.”

Subsequently, London Mayor Sadiq Khan sent a letter to CEO Amodei, emphasizing London as a stable and innovation-friendly environment, suggesting it as a strategic base.

This initiative is part of a trend where governments are seeking to enhance AI sovereignty and reduce reliance on foreign companies. Last month, the UK announced plans to establish a national AI research institute worth approximately 40 million pounds, aiming to drive innovation in science, healthcare, and transportation.

Recognizing that the UK lacks significant domestic competitors to major US AI research institutions, the government is seeking to expand collaboration with these companies.

Currently, Anthropic employs about 200 people in the UK, with 60 of them being research staff. Last year, they appointed former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as a senior advisor.

Competitor OpenAI also recently announced the expansion of its London operations, highlighting it as their largest research hub outside the US.

Google, after acquiring DeepMind in 2014, has been expanding its presence in London and is currently developing a large campus on King’s Road worth around 1 billion pounds.

Amidst this environment, Anthropic is preparing for a possible initial public offering as early as this year. A government official stated that “the ideal scenario would be a dual listing in both the UK and the US,” but acknowledged that the likelihood is low.

Another official mentioned, “We are continuously engaging in dialogue with them (Anthropic),” and noted a continued collaboration based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last year to enhance scientific progress and AI supply chain security.

Peter Kyle, the UK’s Minister for Industry, remarked, “Anthropic is one of several high-growth companies we hope will increase their investment in the UK,” adding, “We are actively promoting the UK’s environment for investment, innovation, and expansion through the Global Talent Taskforce. It’s not about the listing, but about talent.”
