[News Today]

This is the world at this hour.

The U.S. government has identified the shipbuilding industry as a key industry, following semiconductors, where equity acquisition is possible.

In particular, there is attention on whether the large-scale shipbuilding investments promised by South Korea to the U.S. will lead to related discussions.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pessent indicated the shipbuilding industry as a potential target for corporate equity acquisition, following semiconductors, during an interview with Fox Business on the 27th local time.

Secretary Pessent stated, “Shipbuilding is an industry where we need to be self-sufficient.”

He remarked on the necessity of acquiring stakes in shipbuilding, mentioning that the industry has been neglected by the U.S. for several decades.

Attention is on whether discussions will proceed alongside the $150 billion shipbuilding investment package that South Korea has agreed to provide to the U.S.

However, the shipbuilding investment package agreed upon by South Korea and the U.S. is still unclear in nature, and further consultation between the two countries is needed.

Previously, the U.S. government decided to invest a total of $11.1 billion, including subsidies based on the Semiconductor Act to Intel and secured a 10% stake in Intel. It also expressed intentions to acquire American companies in other key industries but has not yet specified concrete industries.
