The United States states that the political situation in South Korea should “develop in a manner consistent with the rule of law.”

[Financial News] The U.S. Department of State has reiterated that South Korea’s political situation, including President Yoon Suk-yeol’s emergency martial law and the ensuing impeachment situation, should unfold in a manner consistent with the rule of law.

In a briefing on the 9th (local time), State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “What we wish to see in this period of trial and uncertainty, and what we have been pleased to witness over the past few days, is South Korea’s democratic resilience.”

Spokesperson Miller also added, “We stand with the Korean people,” and “We will keep lines of communication open with all relevant parties in Korea.”

When asked who President Joe Biden’s counterpart in Korea currently is, he responded, “President Yoon (Suk-yeol) is the president of Korea,” and that “Korea’s political procedures will naturally proceed under its laws and constitution.”
