The U.S. Department of Labor announced last week that the number of new jobless claims increased by 4,000 from the previous week to 249,000.
This is the highest number in nearly a year since the first week of August last year, surpassing the expert forecast of 235,000 claims compiled by Dow Jones.
The number of continued claims for unemployment benefits, which have been filed for 2 weeks or more, increased by 33,000 from the previous week to 1.877 million, marking the highest level in 2 years and 8 months.
Continued claims have been rising since the end of April, indicating that more people are having difficulty finding new jobs after becoming unemployed.
The Federal Reserve of the United States noted after its July interest rate decision meeting that the country’s employment growth has slowed, and although the unemployment rate is still low, it has increased.
